The view is from an abandoned railway bridge over the Lincoln Highway. The reinforced concrete structure is from around 1914, barely wide enough for two cars, and was known as the subway. This was a state of California improvement on an 1864 wagon road.

Above the graffiti is the original path of the Lincoln Highway, outlined by rocks and continuing around the bush at top center. This routing continued in use until 1926 when the Rainbow Bridge was opened.
