NAUVOO STATUE #1 (Nauvoo IL)
A near-silhouette of Mormon founder Joseph Smith and his brother Hyram, both murdered nearby by a Christian mob in 1844. The group then splintered, but the largest number followed the sun--and Brigham Young--to what is now Utah, 1200 miles (1950 km) west.
Here the Smiths are above the Mississippi River, taking a final look at the unfinished Nauvoo Temple. Statues by Stan Watts and Kim Corpany were installed in 2003.
