The rock formation is Scotts Bluff, towering 800 feet (245 m). It was here that Mark Twain, riding in a stagecoach, described seeing a Pony Express Rider appear--then quickly vanish from sight.

The Re-Rider is heading into Mitchell Pass, a wagon trail built by the US Army in 1850, shortening the journey for pioneers.
