SCULPTURE & BRIDGE (Rt 66 Tulsa OK)

SCULPTURE & BRIDGE (Rt 66 Tulsa OK)

This monumental two-piece sculpture sits on a plaza leaving downtown Tulsa. Bronze statues show horses on an oil-field wagon getting spooked by a Model-T Ford. In the car is Cyrus Avery, the key figure behind early Route 66, and his family.

In the background is the closed and crumbling Cyrus Avery Bridge. The replacement is at left. Afternoon sun adds a raking shadow.

This is clearly a scene sculptor Robert Summers intended--a pedestrian walkway (built earlier) provided the vantage point. But other images here offer different interpretations.
