This painted wooden sign prohibited travelers from using the towpath as a shortcut. Animals pulling boats could be spooked by a rapidly-moving buggy, or rider on horseback.

The fine is about $120 in today's dollars. The sign is displayed at the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse.
