Many of these old structures rise far above their functional value. They can be especially lovely against the sky, in silhouette, or when shadows amplify their lines against old brick.

Once a common feature in American cities, exterior fire escapes are gradually disappearing. Modern buildings have interior stairs protected by steel fire doors.

Some structures here are actually inside walkways using the same materials. A few double as balconies.
