OF QUALITY (Rt 66 Tucumcari NM)
The entire sign is shown in the image "Drive-Inn (Tucumcari NM)." This detail shot proves you couldn't possibly miss it.
A wide band of flashing yellow starts at lower left, between the two big sign components. It wraps over the top and comes down again--ending in an arrow. The top sign itself (now gone) was modern plastic back-lit with ordinary fluorescent bulbs.
The bottom sign is painted metal with two types of lettering--a modern script popular around 1960 or so, and a rustic board design. The last one is accentuated with neon.
When Rt 66 was the way to go, this drive-in had everything going for it. It was the last place in town, and a handy right turn before 60 miles of near-desert.
But I-40 left it stranded far from any interchange. It was invisible and forgotten--except by locals, and folks who might have stopped off at an older, cheaper, motel in town.
