It was the pigheadedness of the Donner MEN that led to this tragedy. Had they remained on the main trail, they could have made it in time.

Instead they trusted con-man Lansford Hastings who promoted a bogus "short cut" he had never actually traveled. It was brutal and inefficient and led to all the deaths here.
