It's only a third-of-a-mile long, but this is some of the toughest rock in the world. It took Chinese crews working for the Central Pacific two-years to chip, chisel and mainly blast their way through. A shaft was sunk in the middle allowing four faces of the granite to be worked at once.

Tunnel #6 is 1659 feet (505 m) long and just big enough for a single train. It was in service for 126 years. I wonder how many vandals know its history?
