This is the original path of the Transcontinental Railroad in the 1860s as it crossed from CA into NV. Tunnels were needed and Snow Sheds were eventually built to protect exposed track.

This stretch uses pre-fabricated reinforced concrete segments hauled to the scene, replacing the original wooden sheds. Narrow windows are for ventilation...those locomotives burned coal or oil and produced choking pollution.

This rugged stretch is no longer used, and tracks have been removed.
