Constructed by thousands of Chinese laborers in the 1860s. They were imported to build the Central Pacific to its eventual joining with the Union Pacific in 1869, completing the Transcontinental railroad.

Granite boulders excavated from this mountain were used to create a gradual approach slope. The concrete snow shed at extreme left leads into a tunnel.
