The 1864 Dutch Flat and Donner Lake Wagon Road was pushed through largely to build the Transcontinental Railroad. The road later became the Lincoln Highway.

Trains still operate through here, although they don't use the 1860s grading, tunnels and snowsheds above Donner Lake.
