George Washington surveyed locally as a young man, and as a General led military expeditions down westward trails. This restored cabin in a small riverfront park was his base of operations in the 1750s.

Under President Thomas Jefferson, construction of the National Road began here. In the background looms the modern replacement, Interstate 68, and a semi heading west.
