Both BNSF and Rt 66 go through rock cuts as they approach Hackberry. The railroad (formerly the Santa Fe) is a far more impressive engineering feat. Railroads strive for a level grade and have to avoid exactly the kinds of ups-and-downs pictured here along 66.
