VIEW FROM LUCILLE'S (Rt 66 nr Hydro OK)

This was home to "The Mother of the Mother Road"--the late Lucille Hamons. For nearly 60-years she operated this small gas station and adjoining motel. The post at far right supports the upper story living quarters. What's here now is largely a re-creation, and the 1950s vintage pumps with their reproduction globes are not original.

But Route 66 is. The eastbound pick-up truck is on 1931 concrete, while its shadow completely fills the westbound lane.

I-40, constructed here in the 1960s, is just across the ditch. There is no convenient exit, and the lack of access hurt but did not succeed in killing this small business...unlike so many others.
