This old marker is on the approximate site where James Marshall found gold while building a water-powered sawmill for John Sutter in 1848. The American River is in the background.

The stones are obviously just painted gold. But a 109 pound (50 kg) nugget was found in CA in 1869.

This site, 9 miles (15 km) from the Lincoln Highway, is now a state historic park.
