The desert tends to get its rain all at once. After this storm overwhelmed drains, Rt 66 traffic is being detoured onto a side street away from BNSF tracks.

Part of 66 through the California desert was built without culverts and can be impassable after heavy storms. Built-up sections of roadway are prone to washouts. And sections below the surrounding desert get coated with mud.
