Google "googie" if you want the full story. It was originally an architectural form that started in southern California around 1950 or so, and spread via Rt 66 and other means. The fanciful shapes changed over the years, adding angularity, and providing a time-capsule look to many pre-Interstate highways.

This business was originally a gas station. The futuristic canopy was a big reason to stop. Now it's a liability without enough clearance for the equipment at left.
