There were originally 31 structures like this to carry the second Erie Canal over one river (just out of sight). This improvement took from 1849-57 to complete. It lasted just 60 years before the final canal modernization forced removal of all but eight structures because they were in the way!

The arch above supported the towpath for animals pulling boats along the canal bed beyond. Stone supports remain and created a flat surface. The gaps were bridged by massive timbers fitted together and caulked to hold water.
