This 1962 Steak 'n Shake restaurant is on E. St. Louis Street, known as "City 66" following a 1936 bypass around downtown. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

Steak 'n Shake began in 1934 along Rt 66 in Bloomington/Normal IL. The original restaurant is long gone.

Part of the history is the strident signage. This snappy slogan is above a food preparation area. In the dining room, indoor neon glows with "TAKHOMASAK"--or Take Home a Sack (of burgers). Outdoor signs hawk "Tru-Flavor Shakes," "Genuine Chili" and "Steakburgers."
