GUTTED GAS PUMP (Rt 66 Landergin TX)

GUTTED GAS PUMP (Rt 66 Landergin TX)

A larger shot appears as "Hitchhiking Gas Pump" taken several years earlier. The pump has since been salvaged for parts...or maybe vandalized...it's hard to tell.

These pumps are rapidly disappearing except at out-of-the-way convenience stores. They were some of the first with electronic, instead of mechanical, readouts. But they did not take credit cards or ZIP codes, or offer you the negative option of a car wash. All the station operator could do was turn on the pump--then hope you came inside to pay.

Landergin appears to be a compete ghost town. This gas station and a nearby cafe are both closed, as is the gin itself--a giant reinforced concrete landmark that was doomed when Rock Island trains stopped running in 1980.
