The Pony Express sped information in 10-days from St. Joseph MO to Sacramento CA. It was displaced 17 months later by technology--a telegraph wire.

Portions of the trail were used by the transcontinental railroad later in the 1860s. And much of it became the Lincoln Highway in 1913. (Those later images are in separate galleries.)
