]]>Two classics got together, by happenstance, for this shot. The windshield is on a 100th anniversary Harley-Davidson motorcycle owned by a Pennsylvania couple. This is just how they parked it, framing a classic 1932 Standard gas station and its lone gravity-pump.

The original two-lane version of Rt 66 is just out of view here in Odell IL, about 80 miles south of Chicago.

The station, in near-ruins a few years ago, has been lovingly restored by the town of 1000, and is now a major tourist attraction. Enough so that the couple from Pennsylvania spent quite some time inside. Then they were off again on the big Harley--bound for California on vacation--and planning to take Rt 66 as much as possible.

]]>These friends, doing Rt 66 on rented Harleys, had passed right by Wilkerson's to fill up. While posing (and clowning) they marveled at the great number of "petrol stations" we Yanks had simply abandoned along 66. And of course they're right.

Wilkerson's adobe structure had partially collapsed at this point. Adobe brick, when not protected by a solid outer coating, will melt away in the rain just like an eroding hillside.
