REO CARS & MAIL POUCH (Lincoln Highway Ligonier IN)
Lettering of at least two ghost signs appears in this image. "Ligonier REO Cars Garage" is the most recent--from around 1920. It has been marred by an upper-story window.
REO CARS was painted over yellow block letters that spell out POUCH. The bottom of MAIL appears right above, and TOBA is next to the window. It would have read CHEW MAIL POUCH TOBACCO--a classic sign that has been hidden for nearly a century.
In addition there is strong evidence of a third ghost sign! The shoulders and collar of a human figure may appear left of the window from a possible earlier sign.
REO used the initials of the man who founded Oldsmobile--Ransom E. Olds--and produced cars until 1936. A famous vehicle, the REO Speedwagon, became the name of a rock group.
A companion image highlights the REO section of this wall.
